Separated Parents Information Programme

What is a Separated Parents Information Programme (SPIP)?

The Separated Parents Information Programme is a course developed by Cafcass for separated or divorced couples with children. SPIP is designed to promote and help parents understand what their children most need from them during the separation process.

The programme covers the effects of parental conflict on children as well as positive conflict resolution. Its aim is to look at how feelings and reactions to the separation can affect communications. The programme helps parents to focus on their child/children and their needs at this time and beyond. It is not a parenting skills course.

What will happen on the programme?

Together with parents, we will:

  • Encourage you to think positively and find solutions to your situation.
  • Watch a powerful DVD made by young people with a thought-provoking message for parents.
  • Consider the views of the parents and children as we discuss a prepared scenario.
  • Focus on the postives parents bring to raising a family through group discussions and child-centred activities.
  • Look at the emotional effects that divorce and separation can have and the options for moving forward.

About the programme

  • It is a four hour programme, which is completed in one day, in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
  • It is usually delivered to a small mixed group of parents.
  • Parents must attend the whole programme.
  • Separated parents do not attend on the same day, but it is important that both parents attend.
  • If Cafcass have made the referral the Programme is usually free of charge as it serves part of a court order. If parents would like to self-refer the fee is £110.
