Can you help us give hope to every child?

Spurgeons helps more than 37,000 children and young people and over 64,000 parents and carers.  Through the delivery of support and intervention services and by speaking up on behalf of those who need us most, we give vulnerable and disadvantaged children and families the chance they need for a better present and more hope filled future.

You will find us working at the heart of communities- listening, learning and building trust to make a lasting difference.  Our Christian faith remains an active and important motivation for the work that we do.  It forms the roots from which our people’s collective desire to help children and young people is linked to, regardless of their own beliefs.

We have exciting new opportunities to join our team at HMP Norwich to deliver family services within a prison setting. and are looking for enthusiastic, imaginative individuals experienced in working with children and families

We are looking for people who believe that families visiting their loved ones in prison deserve to be treated in a respectful, non-judgmental and empathic way, encouraging a positive visit experience.

Can you make a cup of tea, play with a child or listen with empathy?

The following volunteer roles require a satisfactory DBS check and two references and do not involve prisoner contact:

Visitors Centre Welcomer Role – meet and greet families, provide emotional support to visitors, serve refreshments to visitors, and carry out basic admin tasks. The Visitors Centre is located within close proximity to the prison – this involves no contact with prisoners.

  • Visitors Centre Play Space Volunteer – within the Visitors Centre we have a dedicated Play Space for children to play before their prison visit. Volunteers assist the Play Worker to set up activities for the children, welcome the children and their parents to the Play Space, engage the children in activities.   The Visitors Centre is located within close proximity to the prison – this involves no contact with prisoners.

The following volunteer roles require vetting by Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service because they involve having contact with prisoners:

Play area Volunteer – Set up activities for the children, welcome the children and their parents to the Play Space, engage the children in activities. Ensure the play area is kept clean and tidy. Encourage the children to take suitable activities back to the table.

Visits take place on Monday afternoons, Tuesday morning and afternoon, Wednesday afternoon, Thursday morning and afternoon, Friday morning and Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Please note that vetting by Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service can take several months to obtain. Many of our volunteers begin in roles at the Visitors Centre whilst applying for vetting. All roles require a satisfactory DBS certificate and two references.

Weekend availability is preferable.   Full training will be provided.
