Volunteers

Volunteer for Us

Volunteers are an integral part of the work we do at Spurgeons. Our volunteers support us across every department and in each of our Children's Centres. They are an essential part of our success story and we recognise the huge contribution they make.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering can be a great way of meeting new people and learning new skills. Whatever your experience we will work with you to match you to a role that you will enjoy.

Benefits and training

We want to make sure our volunteers reap the benefits of offering their time, knowledge and skills to us. We believe our volunteers should personally gain from their experience with us and we are committed to making sure this happens.

As a volunteer with Spurgeons, you will receive thorough and appropriate training, support and guidance from a named member of staff. You will also receive regular feedback from the team, as well as the opportunity to let us know how you're feeling and where you might want further support or development.

Volunteer at your local Spurgeons Children’s Centre

Our volunteers are an incredibly important part of our work with children and young people. You can get involved at our Children’s Centres in a number of ways, including:

  • Supporting activity sessions
  • Running or helping at fundraising events
  • Mentoring a young carer
  • Mentoring a young offender
  • Speaking about our work in schools

How to volunteer with us

Spurgeons' works with hundreds of volunteers every year and we provide a full support service for everybody who volunteers with us.

Got some free time and want to help us change lives in your community? Here's how:

1) Complete a volunteer application form (including two references) and our equal opportunities form.

2) Once we have matched your application to a suitable role, we will let you know which documents we require for the DBS process. You will need to bring these with you to an interview.

3) You will be invited for an interview.

4) After your interview, if you are suitable for the role, we will contact your two references.

5) After we receive both references and your DBS has been returned, we will then begin your induction.

6) We will support you as you settle you into the role, so that you have the time to learn about what we do and why, and the chance to ask lots of questions.

And beyond...

We will meet regularly with you to make sure things are going well and that your experience is positive and rewarding.

What we offer our volunteers

  • A full induction and all training necessary for your volunteering role
  • A named supervisor for you, with regular supervision meetings
  • We treat you, and all volunteers, in-line with our equal opportunities policy
  • Reimburse volunteers for out-of-pocket expenses
  • Provide insurance cover for volunteers
  • Ensure the place you work in is safe

What we expect from our volunteers

  • To follow all policies and procedures
  • Meet mutually agreed time commitments, or give notice if this is not possible
  • Work to the best of your ability

Volunteer stories

Grace

Every week, at the Honeyhill Children’s Centre in Peterborough, we provide space for a foodbank, organised by the Trussell Trust.  Grace had wanted to give something back to her community while she was studying law. Through volunteering during young carers’ group sessions, which Spurgeons ran alongside the foodbank, Grace had the opportunity to support young people. The experience helped her discover a passion for supporting vulnerable children and she is now training to be a youth support worker.

"The foodbank is a wonderful way of meeting a real need in this community and throughout Peterborough as a whole. I enjoy seeing people’s immediate need being meet and them leaving with their bags of food and a smile on their faces. It is very rewarding, helping others, and three hours of your time working with the foodbank can help to give each person at least three days of food! You also get a real sense of being a part of all the hard work that goes on in the Children’s Centre."

What others say

"Volunteering means I’m giving something back to the community. It gives me experience in working with children which has helped me gain confidence"

Thank you for taking the time to visit our website, we’d love for you to get involved
