Staff Benefits

Spurgeons employees have access to a comprehensive benefits package, aimed at meeting their needs now and in the future.

Group Personal Pension Plan - Aviva

To underline our commitment to our company pension scheme, Spurgeons will make payments into the scheme of between 5% and 7%, depending on the level of the employee’s own contribution.

Annual Leave

Employees receive 25 days’ annual leave each year (pro rata for part timers), as well as bank holidays. Leave entitlement increases to 27 days after five years’ service and 29 days after 10 years’ service.

Special Leave

Spurgeons provides for paid leave of absence for all employees in times of bereavement and carers’ leave in cases of terminal illness, subject to certain qualifying conditions. Spurgeons also supports employees in taking unpaid leave in cases of emergency to assist dependant relatives.

Sickness Absence and Pay

Spurgeons operates a generous occupational sick pay scheme, including periods of full and half pay, subject to certain qualifying conditions. Spurgeons also provides statutory sickness payments (SSP) where employees qualify.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

Spurgeons recognises that employees may need support in dealing with a variety of issues throughout their lives. The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is a 365 days-a-year, 24/7 independent, confidential counselling and information service, provided free of charge to all Spurgeons’ employees and their immediate family members. Support is available on a range of issues including work related concerns, emotional, legal, financial and health issues.

The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is provided in conjunction with BHSF’s Employee Care Scheme. 

Family Leave

Spurgeons provides maternity, paternity and parental leave entitlements, including maternity and paternity pay in excess of statutory requirements, available after a qualifying period.

Flexible Working and Work-Life Balance

The right to request flexible working is available to all employees, not just those with a statutory right, as per Spurgeons’ flexible working policy. There are a number of different flexible working arrangements available, for example term-time working and job-shared posts. Flexible working arrangements are made by mutual consent, meeting both the individual’s and the service or department’s needs.

Child Care Vouchers

In partnership with another not for profit organisation, Linking Up, Spurgeons offers qualifying staff a childcare voucher scheme. 

This is a flexible way to meet the costs of childcare. Part of an employee’s salary can be given up or ‘sacrificed’ in exchange for childcare vouchers. Within certain limits, these vouchers are non-taxable and exempt from National Insurance contributions. Childcare vouchers can then be exchanged, in whole or part, for the approved and registered childcare services an employee uses.

Learning, Development and Training

Spurgeons invests in its staff to allow them to learn, develop and train. We recognise that not only will training and development equip you to do your job better but that it also helps you stay up-to-date in your relevant field, meaning you can help Spurgeons develop and grow as an organisation. Training opportunities include externally accredited qualifications and ongoing professional development.

Spurgeons Learning Space

All employees receive a corporate induction to Spurgeons via Spurgeons Learning Space. You also receive a local induction programme for the setting and the role you are to work in. 

You will also receive access to the following learning areas, either through face-to-face group sessions or via e-learning modules:

Management Development

For those in managerial roles, Spurgeons also offers modules in recruitment and selection, managing people and finance.

We also encourage the use of everyday experience in the workplace as a means of learning. Staff can experience on-the-job learning activities, such as job shadowing, mentoring and coaching.

Supervision and Appraisal

Within Spurgeons, staff can expect to receive regular 1:1 meetings every 4-6 weeks with their line manager and an annual performance review and appraisal.
