Volunteering in a prison Visitors' Centre
For over 140 years volunteers have been core to the work that we do with children and young people. So much of what we do would not be achieved without the dedication, commitment and passion of our volunteers.
Volunteers make up about 52% of Spurgeons’ 1,150 workforce and are essential in enabling us to work with children and young people. We cherish all our volunteers because of the invaluable work they do in having a positive impact of the lives of tens of thousands of children.
We provide a variety of volunteering roles and opportunities, including working to support families and children visiting relatives in prisons.
What do our prison Visitors’ Centre volunteers do?
- Family Support Worker – visitors’ centre volunteer provide support and advice to visiting families, booking people in for visits, respond to phone enquiries, generally supporting where needed
- Play Worker - play area volunteers work within the prison visits hall in the play area, working alongside the play co-ordinator to normalise children's visits
- Catering Worker - hospitality volunteers serve refreshments to prisoners and their families inside prison visits halls
