Project 229 gets the Dragons' Den treatment

Project 229 bench

An exciting new addition sits within the forecourt of Project 229 community centre in Kempston, Bedfordshire.

The Spurgeons’ project, affectionately called ‘the bubble house’, has a new interactive bench, in memory of Mr Alan Wright who was cared for at Spurgeons’ Stockwell Home from 1921-1932.

Commissioned by Mr Wright’s family, the bench is popular with children and adults who visit the open access community resource, which provides a variety of services for local people, including Doorsteps@229 community cafe, youth projects, adult learning and family activities.

Local artist Luke Wesley used locally-sourced oak to carve the seat, and its metal and plastic abacus was created by local Dragon’s Den entrepreneur Max McMurdo, whose contemporary eco design business was invested in by Deborah Meaden and Theo Paphitis from the popular TV show.
