Dave Burgess-Pearson - Volunteer Co-ordinator
“There was something in the advert about giving something back.” The advert was for a Volunteer / Mentor for Stoke Axis Project and this inspired me to apply for the role. Working as a volunteer has given me the biggest sense of achievement, helping young people to achieve something has made me believe in myself again as not only do the young people flourish but the volunteers do as well. The most superb feeling was being invited to the House of Commons to see the young man I was mentoring collect an award for Young Person of the Year. I received the training to do my job but more importantly has been the encouragement I have received from members of my team at Spurgeons in Stoke. Now I am employed Volunteer Mentor Co-ordinator and there is nothing like feeling you get from getting everyone in the same room who feels the same about something so important. If Spurgeons asked me to do something I would automatically say yes – they have done so much for me.
